Powering the new administrative capital with EHV cables – a first for Egypt

As part of Egypt's 2030 vision plan to develop a competitive, balanced and diversified economy, Elsewedy Electric has contracted with the Ministry of Defense to execute the prestigious new capital tunnel project. The project includes engineering, design, fabrication, site testing and commissioning to connect the main three substations of the new administrative capital - a total route length of 17 kms.

The work will proceed in 8 stages:

  1. Coring stage
  • Preparation work for the steel structure
  1. Steel structure installation
  • Hot-dip galvanized steel structure fixed to the wall to hold 1 x 2000 mm2 power cables
  1. Scaffolding
  • Construct a platform to support the cable laying process H: 3.5 meters, W: 1.8 meters, L: 8 kms
  1. Cable laying
  • 107 kms of power cables laid inside tunnels by an innovative conveying machine system
  • Power cable sagging
  • We will ensure vertical sag of cables to adapt to thermal expansion and axial force
  • Power cable fixing
  • JGP 8 clamps fix the trefoil cables to restrain electromagnetic forces
  1. Jointing
  • Connecting the two sections of the cables
  1. Fiber optic cables
  • For the substations to communicate
  1. Distribution thermal system DTS
  2. Fire coating process
  • Followed by the termination process inside substation

As part of our commitment to the safety of contractors and employees, we adhere to the highest international health, safety & environmental (HSE) regulations (OSHA, EN, BS & NFPA). All employees are drilled to understand their roles in case of an emergency.
